How to Clean Your Ductless Mini-Split Filter

Ductless mini-splits use washable, reusable mesh air filters. Keeping them clean takes only 10 minutes and keeps your heating and cooling running at peak efficiency all year.

Quick Summary:

Unlike central HVAC systems that require disposable paper filters, ductless wall units feature washable high-density mesh screens. Clean them every 4 to 6 weeks with lukewarm tap water and mild dish soap to maintain strong airflow, cut electricity use by 15%, and prevent musty odors.

Ductless mini-splits are everywhere across Pittsburgh — in charming Victorian homes in Shadyside, brick row houses in Lawrenceville, finished basements, and modern room additions. They provide whisper-quiet comfort and pinpoint zone temperature control.

At HVAC Pittsburgh, our technicians specialize in ductless mini split services in Pittsburgh. Here is our straightforward, 5-step guide on keeping your mini-split filters spotless.

The 5-Step DIY Mini-Split Filter Cleaning Guide

1

Turn Off the Unit Completely

Use your remote control or wall thermostat to power down the indoor unit. Never open the front cover or remove filters while the blower fan is spinning, as airborne dust can be sucked directly into the delicate internal coil fins.

2

Gently Open the Front Access Panel

Place both hands on the lower left and right corners of the front plastic cover. Gently pull forward and upward until you feel the hinges click into the open, locked position.

3

Unclip and Slide Out the Mesh Filters

You will see two curved mesh screens sitting right in front of the aluminum cooling fins. Push the bottom tab upward slightly to disengage the clip, then slide each filter downward and out.

4

Vacuum or Wash with Lukewarm Water

For light dust, simply use a soft vacuum brush attachment. For sticky dirt or pet dander, rinse the mesh in a sink with lukewarm water and a drop of mild liquid dish soap. Always spray water from the clean side out so dust washes away from the mesh rather than deeper into it.

5

Let Air Dry Completely & Re-Install

Shake off excess water and lay the filters flat on a towel in a shaded area to air dry completely. Never use a hairdryer or place damp filters back into the unit, as trapped moisture creates mold. Once bone-dry, slide them back into their guide tracks, snap the front panel shut, and turn the power back on.

What About the Small Deodorizing / Catechin Filters?

Many brands like Mitsubishi and Daikin include small rectangular carbon or enzyme filter strips clipped onto the large mesh screens. These specialty strips neutralize odors and allergens. Do not wash these small strips with water — simply vacuum them every 3 months and replace them with fresh OEM strips every 12 to 24 months.

When Do You Need Professional Deep Coil Cleaning?

Washing the mesh filters handles surface dust. However, over 1 to 2 years of heavy use, microscopic mold spores and dust slip past the filters and coat the internal blower barrel fan wheel and drain pan.

You need a professional deep pressure wash and sanitation service if:

  • You see black speckles or mold buildup inside the air output louvers.
  • The unit produces a musty, sour odor when running.
  • Water drips from the indoor unit onto your floor or walls (indicating a clogged condensate line).
  • Airflow feels weak even when the mesh filters are clean.
